Several species of wasps are found in Bulgaria, including common wasps (Vespula germanica), hornets (Vespa crabro), and paper wasps (Polistes dominula). They have a characteristic yellow-and-black coloration, a thin 'waist,' and a stinger. Size varies from 10 mm for common wasps to 30 mm for hornets.
Wasps live in colonies that start each spring from a fertilized queen. Nests can be underground, in wall cavities, or hanging from branches or eaves, depending on the species. They feed on nectar and other insects, and are important natural predators and pollinators.
Wasps can be aggressive, especially when threatened or when their nest is disturbed. Their stings are painful and can be dangerous for people with allergies. Large nests near residential areas pose a safety risk.
Regularly check around your home for signs of wasp nests, especially in spring. Seal cracks and openings in the building's exterior. Keep food covered when eating outdoors. Avoid wearing bright colors or strong perfumes that might attract wasps. Do not attempt to remove large nests yourself.
